すみません, ごめんなさい and apology choices

Choose an apology that fits distance, responsibility and setting.

In short

すみません is extremely versatile: apology, attention-getter, and sometimes gratitude for trouble taken. ごめんなさい is a direct apology and tends to feel more personal; casual ごめん fits closer relationships.

How it works

More formal or serious apologies use other expressions, but everyday learners can go far by controlling these basic register differences.

Useful contrast

The same English “sorry” covers several social functions, so Japanese choice depends on what you are doing with the phrase.

Examples

すみません、駅はどこですか。
Excuse me, where is the station?
遅れてごめんなさい。
I am sorry I am late.

Common pitfall

Do not use casual ごめん automatically with strangers, staff or formal relationships.
