Aizuchi: Japanese listener signals

Short responses that show attention without necessarily expressing agreement.

In short

Japanese conversation frequently uses brief listener responses such as はい, ええ, そうですか, そうなんですね, へえ and なるほど.

How it works

Their main job may be “I am following you”, “I received that”, surprise, empathy, or acknowledgement. The exact tone depends on intonation and relationship.

Useful contrast

English learners sometimes over-translate はい as a strong “yes, I agree”. In conversation it can simply mark attentive receipt.

Examples

そうなんですね。
I see / So that is how it is.
なるほど。
I see / That makes sense.

Common pitfall

Do not repeat the same response mechanically. Match the situation: neutral acknowledgement, surprise, understanding or sympathy.
