Useful Japanese in shops and service encounters

A small set of patterns covers a surprising amount of everyday interaction.

In short

〜をください asks for an item clearly. 〜はありますか asks whether something is available.

How it works

Staff language may be much more honorific than the Japanese you need to produce. You can answer in clear Japanese without mirroring every keigo form.

Useful contrast

Numbers, counters and confirmation questions matter more than memorizing elaborate scripts.

Examples

This one, please.
By card, please.

Common pitfall

Do not panic when staff use unfamiliar honorifics. Listen for the key noun, number, choice or confirmation being requested.
