Sentence endings ね, よ and かな

Small endings that shape how information is shared with the listener.

In short

ね invites alignment or treats something as shared: いい天気ですね. よ presents information as something the speaker is supplying or emphasizing: これは便利ですよ. かな expresses self-directed uncertainty or wondering in casual contexts.

How it works

These are interactional choices, not decoration. They tell the listener how the speaker positions the information.

Useful contrast

English often conveys the same effects through intonation or phrases such as “you know”, “isn’t it?”, or “I wonder”.

Examples

きれいですね。
It is beautiful, isn’t it / isn’t it nice?
明日は雨かな。
I wonder if it will rain tomorrow.

Common pitfall

Overusing よ can sound pushy; overusing ね can sound unnatural. Listen for how native speakers distribute them.
