Invitations: 〜ませんか and 〜ましょう

Invite someone versus proposing a shared action.

In short

Verb ませんか is a common polite invitation: 一緒に食べませんか, “Would you like to eat together?” 〜ましょう is a proposal: 食べましょう, “Let’s eat.”

How it works

ませんか leaves more room for the other person to accept or decline. ましょう sounds more like moving forward with a shared plan.

Useful contrast

Casual conversation uses plain alternatives such as 行かない? and 行こう.

Examples

映画を見ませんか。
Would you like to see a film?
そろそろ行きましょう。
Let’s get going soon.

Common pitfall

For someone you do not know well, a question-style invitation can feel easier to decline than a strong proposal.
