The て-form: a connector with many jobs
Why one verb form appears in requests, sequences, ongoing actions and many grammar patterns.
In short
The て-form does not have one English tense. It is a connective form that lets another verb, auxiliary, or expression attach.
How it works
It links actions (食べて寝る), forms requests (見てください), combines with いる (読んでいる), しまう, おく, みる and many other patterns.
Useful contrast
Its meaning depends on what follows it. Treat 〜てください and 〜ている as whole constructions built on the same connector.
Examples
窓を開けてください。
Please open the window.
本を読んでいます。
I am reading a book.
Common pitfall
Do not translate every て as “and”. Sometimes it simply provides the grammatical bridge to the next expression.
