せっかく: because the opportunity/effort matters

A word used when something is valuable because of effort, rarity or a special opportunity.

In short

せっかく often frames a situation as worth making use of: せっかく日本に来たから…, “Since I have come all the way to Japan…” It also appears when an effort is unfortunately wasted: せっかく作ったのに…

How it works

The shared idea is that the opportunity, effort or occasion deserves weight.

Useful contrast

English translations vary widely: “since we have the chance”, “after all that effort”, “all the way”, or sometimes no single word.

Examples

せっかく来たので、見ていきましょう。
Since we came all this way, let’s have a look.
せっかく作ったのに。
After I went to the trouble of making it…

Common pitfall

Learn せっかく through situations rather than as a standalone synonym.
