さすが: living up to expectations

Praise or react when someone/something matches a strong prior expectation.

In short

さすが often means “as expected of…” or “that is impressive, just as you would expect.” It can stand alone as a reaction or modify a noun phrase with さすが(は).

How it works

Unlike neutral やっぱり, さすが commonly carries admiration or acknowledgement of reputation/ability.

Useful contrast

Tone matters: it can be warm praise, playful, or occasionally ironic.

Examples

さすがですね。
Impressive, as expected.
さすが先生です。
That is what you would expect from a teacher.

Common pitfall

Do not use it for every “as expected”. Use it when the expectation is tied to someone’s quality, status or known ability.
