の: possession, type and noun linking

Use の to link one noun to another in a wide range of relationships.

In short

A の B can mean B belonging to A, B associated with A, B made for A, B from A, or simply B of type A. Context supplies the exact relationship.

How it works

私の本 is “my book”; 日本語の先生 is “Japanese-language teacher”; 木の机 is “wooden desk”. The first noun narrows or describes the second.

Useful contrast

の is broader than English apostrophe-s. It often behaves like a compact noun-to-noun connector.

Examples

日本の映画
Japanese film
友達の車
a friend’s car

Common pitfall

Do not force a single English translation such as “of”. Translate the relationship naturally.
