から and まで: from and up to

Mark starting and ending points in time, place, or range.

In short

から marks a starting point; まで marks an endpoint or boundary. They can appear together or separately.

How it works

九時から五時まで means “from nine until five”. 東京から京都まで means “from Tokyo to Kyoto”.

Useful contrast

まで describes the endpoint itself; までに adds the idea of a deadline by which something must happen.

Examples

月曜日から働きます。
I work starting Monday.
駅まで歩きます。
I walk as far as the station.

Common pitfall

Do not assume から always means “because”. It has a separate connective use for reasons; context and structure distinguish them.
