Mimetic expressions: more than sound effects
Japanese uses sound-symbolic words for sounds, movement, texture, emotion and states.
In short
Words often grouped as 擬音語・擬態語 can describe actual sounds (ざあざあ rain), physical manner (ゆっくり is not mimetic but behaves adverbially), feelings (わくわく excitement), heartbeat/anxiety (どきどき), texture and many other sensory impressions.
How it works
They are best learned in scenes and collocations because a one-word English gloss often misses the image or intensity.
Useful contrast
Many repeat a sound pattern, but not all repeated words are interchangeable or childish.
Examples
わくわくしています。
I am excited / looking forward to it.
雨がざあざあ降っています。
The rain is pouring down.
Common pitfall
Avoid memorizing huge alphabetical lists. Learn a small expression with the verb or situation it naturally accompanies.
