〜つもり vs 〜予定: intention and schedule

Separate personal intention from a plan or schedule.

In short

つもり expresses what a person intends to do. 予定 describes a plan/schedule and can sound more objective or arranged.

How it works

来年日本へ行くつもりです focuses on my intention. 来週会議をする予定です focuses on the planned schedule.

Useful contrast

Both can refer to future events, but they answer different questions: what do you intend, versus what is planned?

Examples

週末は休むつもりです。
I intend to rest this weekend.
会議は三時に始まる予定です。
The meeting is scheduled to start at three.

Common pitfall

Do not use つもり for events with no intentional agent, such as weather forecasts.
