Grammar · N4
〜ために vs 〜ように: purpose
Two common ways to express purpose, with different kinds of goals.
In short
〜ために fits deliberate goals that the subject can intentionally pursue: 日本へ行くために貯金しています. 〜ように often fits desired states, abilities, prevention, or outcomes not controlled in the same direct way: 忘れないようにメモします.
How it works
ように is especially common with potential verbs, negative goals and states such as “so that I can…” or “so that X does not happen”.
Useful contrast
Both can translate as “in order to”, so the controllability and nature of the goal are more useful than English wording.
Examples
日本で働くために勉強しています。
I study in order to work in Japan.
忘れないように書きます。
I write it down so I will not forget.
Common pitfall
Do not choose solely from translation. Ask whether the purpose is a deliberate action or a desired condition/result.
