Kanji components and radicals
Use recurring shapes as landmarks rather than treating every kanji as a random picture.
In short
Kanji are built from recurring components. One component may be the dictionary radical; others can contribute meaning, sound history, or simply structure.
How it works
For learning, components are most useful as stable visual landmarks: compare similar characters, notice where a component appears, and connect the whole character to real vocabulary.
Useful contrast
A radical is a dictionary classification device; it is not always a complete explanation of a kanji’s modern meaning.
Examples
休

語

Common pitfall
Avoid forcing elaborate stories onto every component. A short memorable cue is useful only if it helps you recognize the real character and word.
